Glossary of Terms

Plans and Specs - Drawings for the project, and a detailed list or description of the types of products and materials to be used. The quantities and any specified upgrades will be included in the plans, along with drawings or blueprints of the project.


Punch List - A list of items of work or small tasks. The punch list is generally created at the end of a job to guide the contractor regarding loose ends, small repairs, and other items that need to be finished before the job is considered done.


Storm Window - A second set of windows installed in a window opening for the purpose of creating extra insulation from outdoor temperatures, especially in cold climates.


Subcontractor - A person or company hired directly by the contractor to perform specialized work. Sometimes referred to as a trade contractor, these are assistants to the main home improvement contractor.


Subfloor - The surface lying under a finished floor. The subfloor is usually made of plywood or concrete and it provides a resting place for the top floor - the one that is visible and comes in contact with your feet when you walk across a room.


Weep Holes - Openings cut into siding, foundations, or brickwork to allow for the runoff of water or the evaporation of condensation that could otherwise cause problems such as rotting and cracking.


Zoning Regulations - Rules established by local governments regarding the location, size, and function of a property or property improvement in a specific place - for example, in your neighborhood.
